I bought a first one five years ago for my son, and it was “very good for the price”. The quality was ok, nothing to say, but the fretboard wood didn’t look very nice and didn’t age well. However, five years after, the rest aged pretty well and it still plays fine, nothing has moved. Kudos HB!!!
Last week I ordered a second one for me, for a project. Just got it two hours ago. And… I couldn’t be happier right out of the box! Quality is 100% impeccable, fret work is beautiful, the new fretboard wood is beautiful, it sounds great (but no it’s not a Custom Shop instrument either). The nut could be cut a little deeper, but that’s already entering into expert luthier setup (which I’ll do later with a new bone nut).
I just finished changing the strings, and I lowered the action to my liking—which means as low as physically possible )) Man… I lowered the saddles to the max and didn’t even need to adjust the neck relief… and there is absolutely NO fret buzz!!!!
So what do I have here: a bass that is well built, sounds good (the E string improves with new strings in 95), has a comfy neck, is super lightweight, short scale, and with ultra low action.
I’ll add EMG GZR pups and electronics, a nicer pickguard, a bone nut, and some good tuning machines (there is no need to improve the bridge, it is good). But already now, it is not only good for the price, it is simply GOOD.
Last but not least—and this is a very personal remark—this instrument brings out a better playing for me. And although this is specific to each player, I think it matters more than the retail price or the “brand on the headstock”.
