After having bought all of the usual suspects (Shure, Sennheiser ...) I was looking for a mic that was able to handle high-level sound pressure without feedback ? I play mostly in Metal / Stoner bands these days with def-and-stupid drummers, as required by the genre. From my high definition S-Beta and e945 I had to go back to the cheap sounding SM58 in order to just hear me screaming without feedback which I driven me to investigate this mic issue.
Then came the OM7 ... it sounds colored to my ears, with a soft and lovely bump on the low-end with proximity effect (which is however the way this one is supposed to be used half of the time) and another one on the esses, both bumps give a nice tone to my voice the former bringing definition and pushing the voice through the "mix". At first and reading reviews I was afraid not be powerful enough (my voice is not powerful at all - nope ... this is not rare in this genre) to use this mic, but this is not the case. Totally adapted for singers from rock to metal, depending on your voice, I bet this one would satisfy 8 out of 10 voices type. And I think it can handle other kinds of voices and genre (Pop, Blues, you name it ...), especially for those looking to add that little extra warmth to their voice on stage. I have quickly recorded some demos in the studio using it, and you can even handle it in the mix with some EQ ? to some extent ? (it's not as flat as my noisy SM7B for sure, but can do the trick with some low-cuts and proper de-essing). Really amazing and nice sounding piece of gear, a real discovery for me. Try it.
